Tips for Extended Family Beach Photos on Oak Island, NC

Extended family beach photos are one of my favorite types of sessions to photograph on Oak Island. There is something incredibly special about capturing multiple generations together while everyone is gathered at the beach creating memories during vacation. Whether it is grandparents with grandchildren, siblings reuniting for the summer, or an entire family celebrating time together along the coast, these sessions often become some of the most meaningful photographs families will cherish for years to come.

Oak Island is an incredible location for extended family beach photos thanks to its wide beaches, beautiful sunset lighting, relaxed atmosphere, and variety of scenic backdrops. From quieter beach accesses with sea oats and dunes to iconic locations like The Point and the piers, there are several spots across Oak Island that work especially well for larger family gatherings.

While I reference Oak Island throughout this blog, many of these same tips also apply to extended family beach sessions on Bald Head Island, Southport, and other coastal destinations throughout North Carolina.

Choose the Right Time for Your Session

Timing becomes especially important for extended family sessions because larger groups naturally take a little more coordination.

I typically recommend scheduling extended family beach photos during the evening hours leading up to sunset when:

  • temperatures are cooler

  • beaches are less crowded

  • lighting is softer and more flattering

  • children tend to be more relaxed

Signature Sunset Sessions are especially beautiful for extended family photos because the softer evening light helps create a relaxed atmosphere while producing the glowing coastal colors many families love.

For families with very young children or earlier bedtime schedules, an earlier Evening Session can also work beautifully while still providing softer beach lighting and a more comfortable experience.

Coordinate Colors — Don’t Match

One of the biggest questions extended families ask is: “What should everyone wear?”

The goal is not for everyone to wear identical outfits, but rather to coordinate colors and tones across the group so the photos feel cohesive and timeless.

Some of my favorite color palettes for beach sessions include:

  • whites

  • creams

  • tans

  • light blues

  • sage greens

  • dusty blues

  • soft neutral earth tones

These colors photograph beautifully against the soft sand, sea oats, and pastel sunset skies found throughout Oak Island.

For larger groups, I typically recommend:

  • choosing 2–3 primary colors

  • incorporating a few neutrals

  • avoiding bright neon colors or large logos

Pick a Location With Plenty of Space

Some beach locations simply work better for extended family sessions than others. When photographing larger groups, I always try to recommend areas that provide:

  • wider beaches

  • easier accessibility

  • fewer crowds

  • open space for groupings

  • scenic dune and sea oat backdrops

Some of my favorite locations for extended family sessions on Oak Island include:

  • The Point

  • Caswell Beach

  • quieter hidden gem beach accesses

  • areas near the piers with wide shoreline views

The extra room allows families to spread out comfortably while creating a more relaxed experience throughout the session.

One thing many extended families appreciate is that I am also happy to come directly to the beach access closest to your vacation rental or meet you right outside the home if you are staying oceanfront. For larger groups, coordinating multiple cars, loading children and grandparents into vehicles, and driving across the island can sometimes add unnecessary stress during vacation. Because of this, many families prefer the convenience of photographing near where they are already staying.

I have photographed family sessions at nearly every beach access on Oak Island, so even if we meet at a location close to your rental home, I can still provide plenty of guidance on:

  • the best lighting

  • scenic backdrops

  • posing

  • sunset timing

  • beach conditions

  • ideal areas for larger group photos

Whether we photograph at one of my favorite recommended locations or a beach access closer to your family’s rental, the goal is always to create a relaxed and enjoyable experience that captures genuine memories together on the coast.

Don’t Stress About Perfectly Posed Photos

One of the biggest misconceptions about extended family sessions is that every single photo needs to be perfectly posed and everyone looking directly at the camera at all times.

While we absolutely capture traditional group portraits, some of the best moments often happen naturally in between poses.

Some of my favorite extended family images usually include:

  • grandparents laughing with grandchildren

  • kids running along the shoreline

  • siblings interacting naturally

  • candid hugs and conversations

  • families walking together at sunset

These authentic moments often become the photos families treasure the most because they truly capture the feeling of being together on vacation.

Be Flexible With Young Children

When young children are involved in extended family sessions, flexibility is key.

The beach naturally helps children feel more comfortable because they are able to:

  • move freely

  • play in the sand

  • explore the shoreline

  • stay active throughout the session

I always try to keep sessions relaxed and low-pressure so children can interact naturally instead of feeling like they are standing still for long periods of time.

One of the biggest advantages of beach sessions is that kids are usually having fun without even realizing they are being photographed.

Plan for Walking and Beach Conditions

Extended family sessions often involve grandparents, young children, and multiple family groups, so choosing a location with easier accessibility can make a big difference.

Some locations on Oak Island require:

  • longer walks through softer sand

  • dune walkways

  • uneven beach terrain

Others provide:

  • easier parking

  • shorter beach access points

  • wider shoreline areas

One thing many families find especially helpful is that I am happy to come directly to the beach access closest to your vacation rental or start the session near your oceanfront home whenever possible. Again, for larger groups, trying to coordinate multiple vehicles, car seats, grandparents, and beach gear can sometimes become one of the most stressful parts of the session. Starting close to where your family is already staying often makes accessibility much easier and allows everyone to begin the session feeling more relaxed.

Because I have photographed at nearly every beach access on Oak Island, I can still help guide families toward the best nearby areas for:

  • lighting

  • scenic backdrops

  • accessibility

  • sunset views

  • larger group spacing

  • sea oat and dune scenery

I’m always happy to help recommend the best location based on your family’s needs, mobility concerns, and the overall style of photos you are envisioning.

Trust the Process During Sunset

One thing I always encourage extended families to do is trust the process throughout the session, especially during sunset.

At the beginning of the session, the beach may still feel bright and busy, but the final portion of daylight often creates the soft glowing light and calm coastal atmosphere that families love most.

Those final sunset moments frequently produce:

  • glowing skies

  • soft pastel colors

  • calmer beaches

  • beautiful ocean reflections

  • relaxed candid moments

This is often when some of the most meaningful extended family images happen naturally.

Morning Sessions Can Also Work Well

While most extended family beach sessions take place during the evening hours, I do occasionally offer morning sessions by special request depending on vacation schedules and availability.

Morning sessions can work especially well for:

  • very large groups coordinating busy schedules

  • families with younger children

  • shorter weekend trips

  • families preferring earlier temperatures

For morning sessions, I typically like to photograph as close to sunrise as possible — ideally within two hours of sunrise — to avoid the harsher heat and stronger overhead sunlight that develops later in the day, especially during summer on Oak Island.

Morning sessions can still create beautiful pastel skies, soft coastal light, and a calm beach atmosphere while offering more flexibility for families with packed vacation schedules.

Extended Family Photos Become More Valuable Every Year

One of my favorite things about extended family beach sessions is knowing how much more meaningful these images often become over time.

Beach vacations bring families together in a way that rarely happens during everyday life, and preserving those moments with grandparents, siblings, cousins, and children together is something families never regret investing in.

The beach may change from year to year. Kids grow older. Families evolve. But the memories captured during these sessions remain.
