Favorite Locations for Family Photos on Oak Island
Oak Island, North Carolina offers some of the best beach photography locations along the North Carolina coast, creating stunning backdrops for unforgettable family photo sessions. From the iconic Oak Island Pier to quieter stretches near Caswell Beach, the island provides a variety of beautiful settings perfect for capturing relaxed, candid family memories at sunset.
One of the most common questions I receive during the scheduling process is, “Which spot on the island do you recommend for our family photo session?” With so many excellent options available, it can be difficult to choose just one location. As a photographer who regularly photographs families on Oak Island, I’ve learned which areas work best for sunset lighting, large extended families, young children, and the bright and airy coastal style many families love. To help make planning your session easier, I’ve compiled a list of some of my clients’ favorite locations across Oak Island to help you choose the perfect backdrop for your upcoming family photo session.
Oak Island Lighthouse | Caswell Beach | Oak Island and Oceancrest Piers | The Point | My Favorite Hidden Gem
Oak Island Lighthouse
Located in Caswell Beach on the eastern end of Oak Island, the Oak Island Lighthouse is one of the island’s most recognizable landmarks and a beautiful location for family beach photos. Combining coastal scenery with a classic piece of Oak Island history, this area offers a unique backdrop that feels both relaxed and distinctly local.
The lighthouse area features a long wooden walkway leading to the beach, rolling dunes covered in sea oats, and wide open shoreline views overlooking both the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Fear River. The variety of scenery makes this location especially versatile for family photography sessions, allowing for a mix of candid beach moments, classic sunset portraits, and images that showcase the natural beauty of Oak Island.
One of the things I love most about the Oak Island Lighthouse area is how well it works for families looking for a quieter and more scenic section of the beach. The open space is ideal for families with young children, larger extended family groups, and vacationing families wanting photos that truly capture the character and coastal charm of Oak Island. Sunset sessions here often provide soft golden light and colorful skies that pair perfectly with the bright and airy photography style many families are looking for during their beach vacation.
Another added benefit is the easy accessibility. Ample parking is available in the lighthouse overflow lot located just past the lighthouse on the beach side of the road, making it convenient for families carrying beach gear, working with young children, or coordinating larger family groups.
If you are searching for a family photo location on Oak Island that combines scenic beach views, natural coastal textures, and one of the island’s most iconic landmarks, the Oak Island Lighthouse is easily one of the best spots for a family photography session.
Caswell Beach Access
The Caswell Beach public beach access is one of my favorite locations for family photography sessions on Oak Island thanks to its wide open shoreline, beautiful sunset views, and quieter atmosphere. Located on the eastern end of the island near the Oak Island Lighthouse, this area offers a classic coastal setting that perfectly captures the relaxed feel of a beach vacation in North Carolina.
Two wooden walkways lead families through the natural dunes and sea oats down to the beach, creating beautiful scenery right from the beginning of the session. These walkways provide a timeless coastal backdrop that photographs beautifully during golden hour as the sun drops lower behind the dunes and soft light fills the beach. The combination of sandy paths, sea oats, and open sky creates a natural and airy look that pairs perfectly with relaxed family portraits and candid moments.
One of the biggest advantages of Caswell Beach is the amount of open space. Compared to other areas of Oak Island, this beach access is often less crowded, giving families more room to spread out and enjoy their session without distractions in the background. This makes it especially ideal for larger extended family sessions, young children who like to run and play, and families wanting a more peaceful beach setting.
Because of the curve of Oak Island, Caswell Beach also offers some of the best sunset views on the island throughout the year — even during the summer months when many east coast beaches lose direct sunset lighting. As the sun sets across the Intracoastal Waterway side of the island, the sky often fills with soft pastel colors and vibrant cotton candy tones that create stunning beach portraits. On clear evenings, you may even catch the Oak Island Lighthouse glowing in the distance, adding another unique coastal element to your family photos.
If you are looking for a location that combines beautiful sunset lighting, natural beach scenery, and a quieter coastal atmosphere, the Caswell Beach access is one of the best places for family beach photos on Oak Island.
The Oak Island Piers
Oak Island is home to two iconic fishing piers — the Oak Island Pier and Ocean Crest Pier — both of which provide stunning backdrops for family beach photography sessions. These landmarks help capture the classic coastal charm that makes Oak Island such a special place for vacationing families, while also offering a variety of scenic settings for relaxed and timeless family portraits.
Both piers create beautiful focal points throughout a session, whether photographed from a distance stretching into the Atlantic Ocean or from underneath the wooden structures where the repeating pilings and symmetry add texture and depth to your images. The pier environments offer a perfect mix of classic beach scenery and unique coastal character that instantly feels like Oak Island.
One of the things I love most about photographing around the piers is the variety they provide within a single location. Sessions can include wide shoreline portraits with the pier in the background, candid moments walking along the surf, and more creative compositions underneath the structures themselves. The surrounding dunes, sea oats, weathered pilings, and soft sand all contribute to the relaxed and natural coastal feel many families are looking for during their beach vacation.
The beaches surrounding both piers are also ideal for families with young children and larger extended family groups thanks to the wide open shoreline and easy accessibility. During sunset sessions, the west-facing beaches near the piers often produce beautiful golden light and colorful skies that pair perfectly with bright and airy beach photography. The combination of glowing sunsets and the silhouette of the piers creates some of the most recognizable and memorable family photos on Oak Island.
Convenient public beach accesses and nearby parking make both pier locations easy to reach for families staying anywhere on the island. Whether you choose the classic atmosphere of the Oak Island Pier or the scenic views surrounding Ocean Crest Pier, these locations offer some of the best settings for family beach photos on Oak Island, North Carolina.
The Point
The Point is one of the most unique and scenic locations for family beach photos on Oak Island. Located on the far west end of the island, this area is known for its incredibly wide stretch of beach, breathtaking sunset views, and natural coastal landscape that feels peaceful and untouched. With panoramic views where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Intracoastal Waterway, The Point offers one of the most visually stunning settings for family photography sessions on Oak Island.
One of the things that makes The Point so special is the variety of scenery available throughout a session. The expansive shoreline provides endless open beach views that are perfect for relaxed family portraits, candid moments with children, and large extended family group photos. During low tide, shallow tidal pools often form across the sand, creating beautiful reflections and fun opportunities for playful, candid images in the water. Families who do not mind getting their feet wet can capture some truly unique sunset moments here.
The natural dunes and sea oats leading toward the beach also create a classic coastal backdrop before even stepping onto the sand. These softer natural textures pair beautifully with the bright and airy photography style many families love for their Oak Island vacation photos. As sunset approaches, The Point often produces some of the most colorful skies on the island, with soft golden light and vibrant coastal sunsets stretching across the horizon.
Because of its wide open layout, The Point is especially ideal for larger groups and extended family sessions. The extra space allows families to spread out comfortably while avoiding crowded backgrounds often found at smaller beach accesses. The peaceful atmosphere also helps create a more relaxed session experience for young children and families wanting natural, candid interactions throughout their photos.
Parking is conveniently located near the west end of Oak Island with easy beach access just steps away from the sand. Visitors should simply pay attention to the one-way traffic pattern and parking signs near the access area.
If you are looking for one of the most scenic and spacious locations for family beach photos on Oak Island, The Point offers stunning sunset views, natural coastal beauty, and one of the most unforgettable beach settings anywhere along the North Carolina coast.
My Favorite Hidden Gem for Family Photos on Oak Island
One of my favorite hidden locations for family beach photos on Oak Island is a quiet beach access tucked away along the island that many visitors never even realize exists. While many families naturally gravitate toward the more popular beach accesses and piers, this spot offers a peaceful atmosphere and some of the most beautiful natural scenery anywhere on Oak Island.
What makes this location so special is the long sandy walkway lined with weathered sand fencing that leads through the dunes toward the beach. The path itself creates a stunning backdrop for portraits before even stepping onto the sand, adding texture, depth, and a timeless coastal feel to your images. The combination of sea oats, dunes, soft sand, and natural beach grasses photographs beautifully during golden hour and pairs perfectly with the bright and airy photography style many families love.
Another reason I love this location is the versatility it offers throughout a session. Tucked behind the dunes is a large open area surrounded by sea oats and coastal greenery that works especially well for relaxed family portraits, candid moments with children, and extended family group photos. Just steps away, the beach opens into a wide and usually quiet stretch of shoreline that provides plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the session without heavy crowds in the background.
Depending on the lighting and tide, families can also capture beautiful oceanfront portraits with distant pier views stretching across the horizon, giving the session a classic Oak Island feel while still maintaining the quieter atmosphere of this tucked-away spot. Sunset sessions here are especially beautiful as the soft evening light filters through the dunes and sea oats while the sky often fills with pastel coastal colors over the ocean.
Because this location is one of my favorite hidden gems for family photography sessions on Oak Island, I typically share the exact meeting location with families when they inquire or book their session. It is the perfect option for families looking for a quieter beach experience, beautiful natural scenery, and a relaxed atmosphere that truly captures the coastal charm of Oak Island.
