Fall Family Photo Session at the NC Museum of Art
Raleigh, NC
Fall in North Carolina always feels fleeting — and this family session at the North Carolina Museum of Art captured that perfect in-between moment just before winter settles in.
We scheduled this session during peak fall color, when the leaves had changed and the campus was filled with rich oranges, warm yellows, and soft earthy tones. The result was a family photo session that felt seasonal, timeless, and full of warmth — one of my favorite times of year to photograph families in Raleigh.
Exploring the NC Museum of Art Grounds in the Fall
One of the things that makes family photography at the NC Museum of Art so special is the variety. We strolled through the museum’s expansive outdoor grounds, stopping at different locations throughout the campus — each spot offering its own texture, light, and perspective.
From open walking paths framed by tall grasses to rolling hills and wooded areas, the NCMA provides an ideal setting for family sessions that feel relaxed and natural rather than rushed or overly posed.
Fall Colors — With a Hint of Spring
One of my favorite parts of this session was incorporating their dog into the photos. Pets are family, and including them in a maternity or family photography session often leads to the most genuine moments.
We spent time walking along the shoreline, pausing for quiet moments together, and letting the session unfold naturally. Babymoon sessions are about slowing down, enjoying the moment, and capturing connection — and this one cheSome of my favorite images from this session came from areas where flowers were still in bloom, despite it being fall. That contrast — vibrant florals paired with autumn leaves — added a subtle hint of spring to the gallery and made the images feel especially unique.
It’s one of the things I love most about photographing at the NC Museum of Art: even as seasons shift, there’s always something unexpected unfolding in the background.
Ending the Session with Golden Fall Light
As we wrapped up the session, the sun peeked through the trees and over the hills, casting soft, golden light across the campus. That final stretch of light is always worth waiting for, especially in the fall, when it filters through changing leaves and creates a warm, glowing backdrop for family portraits.
Those end-of-session moments often become client favorites — quiet, genuine, and full of connection.
