A Hidden Gem Location for Family Beach Photos on Oak Island, NC
One of my favorite things about photographing families on Oak Island is discovering the quieter stretches of beach that many visitors never even realize exist. While the island is known for its iconic piers, beautiful lighthouse, and popular beach accesses, there are also a handful of tucked-away locations that offer a completely different atmosphere — peaceful, relaxed, and incredibly scenic.
One hidden gem location in particular has become one of my favorite places for family beach photography sessions on Oak Island. It combines everything I love most about coastal photography: soft dunes, sea oats swaying in the breeze, wide open shoreline views, beautiful sunset light, and a calm atmosphere that allows families to simply slow down and enjoy being together.
A More Relaxed Beach Experience
One of the biggest reasons families love this hidden location is how quiet and peaceful it feels compared to some of the busier beach accesses on the island.
Instead of crowded beaches and constant foot traffic, this area often provides:
open shoreline
quieter surroundings
natural dune scenery
soft sea oat backdrops
plenty of space for families to spread out comfortably
That calmer atmosphere naturally helps sessions feel more relaxed and candid, especially for:
families with young children
larger extended family groups
couples
vacationing families wanting a quieter experience
The beach itself feels untouched and coastal in the best possible way, creating images that feel timeless and authentic to Oak Island.
One of My Favorite Walkways on Oak Island
One of the things that makes this hidden gem so unique is the beautiful sandy walkway leading toward the beach. Lined with weathered sand fencing, dunes, and sea oats, the path itself creates a stunning backdrop before even stepping onto the shoreline.
These walkways photograph beautifully during the evening hours as soft light filters through the dunes and beach grass. The combination of texture, coastal tones, and natural scenery creates the relaxed and airy coastal feel many families are looking for during their vacation photo session.
Some of my favorite candid moments often happen here:
children walking hand-in-hand
families laughing together along the path
parents interacting naturally with their kids
relaxed portraits surrounded by sea oats and dunes
The setting feels simple, peaceful, and authentically coastal.
Beautiful Backdrops Beyond the Beach
Another reason I love this location is the versatility it provides throughout a session.
Tucked behind the dunes is a large open sandy area surrounded by sea oats and natural coastal vegetation that works beautifully for:
extended family
candid family moments
couples photos
children’s portraits
sunset silhouettes
Just a short walk away, the beach opens into a wide stretch of shoreline with soft sand, gentle dunes, and beautiful ocean views stretching into the distance. Depending on the lighting and tide, the location can also offer distant pier views across the horizon that subtly capture the character of Oak Island without the crowds often found near more popular areas.
Sunset Light at This Location is Incredible
Like many of my favorite beach locations on Oak Island, this hidden gem becomes especially beautiful during the final hour before sunset.
As the evening light softens, the dunes and sea oats begin to glow while the beach often fills with:
warm golden light
pastel coastal skies
soft ocean reflections
calm evening atmosphere
This lighting creates the bright and airy coastal look many families love throughout my work.
Signature Sunset Sessions at quieter locations like this often feel especially peaceful because the beach naturally becomes calmer as the evening progresses.

Sometimes the Best Locations are the Ones Less Traveled
One of the things I love most about Oak Island is that there are still peaceful stretches of beach where families can slow down, enjoy the scenery, and focus on simply being together.
For many families, those quieter moments become some of the most meaningful parts of the session:
kids playing barefoot in the sand
grandparents watching the sunset
cousins running along the shoreline
families laughing naturally together
Those are the moments that often become the most treasured photographs over time.
Why I Keep This Location a Little More Private
Because this location is one of my favorite hidden gems for family beach photography on Oak Island, I typically share the exact meeting location with families once they inquire or book their session.
Part of what makes this spot so special is the peaceful atmosphere and quieter beach experience it provides, and I love being able to recommend it for families looking for something a little more relaxed and tucked away during their vacation.
Whether your family chooses one of Oak Island’s iconic locations or one of these quieter hidden gems, my goal is always the same — creating meaningful images that capture what your time together at the beach truly felt like.
