Meet Andrew

Hey, I’m Andrew — the face behind AEM Creative Photography! I grew up in coastal North Carolina and have always felt connected to the beach, especially Oak Island, Southport, and Bald Head Island. I lived in Southport and Oak Island for two years before moving to Raleigh after getting engaged, and I’m excited to be moving back to the coast in June 2026.

The North Carolina coast has always felt like home to me, which is a big reason why I love photographing families here so much. From sunsets on Oak Island to evenings spent on Bald Head Island and walks along the Southport waterfront, these places hold a lot of personal meaning in my life — including getting married to my wife, Jessica, on Bald Head Island in 2024.

When I’m not photographing families, weddings, or beach sessions, you’ll usually find me spending time with Jessica and our two dogs, Sully and Banks, exploring the coast, or chasing another beautiful sunset.

My goal with every family session is to create a relaxed and enjoyable experience where you can simply enjoy time together while I capture the moments naturally. I know coordinating family photos — especially during vacation — can sometimes feel stressful, but I try to make the process easy, laid-back, and fun for everyone involved.

Whether it’s your first time visiting Oak Island or a family tradition you’ve done for years, I’d be honored to help capture those memories for you along the North Carolina coast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Planning family beach photos on Oak Island, Bald Head Island, or the North Carolina coast should feel simple and stress-free. Below are answers to some of the most common questions families ask before their session, including timing, outfit recommendations, weather concerns, locations, and what to expect during your beach photo experience. My goal is to help you feel fully prepared so you can relax, enjoy the moment, and focus on making memories with your family while I capture the rest.

  • Choosing outfits for your family beach photo session can feel overwhelming, but it does not have to be! I typically recommend light, neutral, and coastal-inspired colors that complement the natural tones of the beach and sunset. Soft blues, creams, whites, tans, sage greens, and muted pastels tend to photograph beautifully on Oak Island, Bald Head Island, and along the North Carolina coast.

Try to coordinate rather than match exactly, and avoid large logos or overly bright neon colors that can distract from the natural scenery and your family’s connection.

I put together a full guide with outfit inspiration, color palettes, and examples from real beach sessions here.

  • Beach weather on the North Carolina coast can change quickly, especially during the summer months. I try to leave at least one evening open each week to help accommodate weather-related reschedules whenever possible.

Often times the weekly or 10-day forecast may show rain several days out, but beach forecasts frequently shift and improve as we get closer to your session date. If bad weather is still in the forecast, I will typically reach out around two days before your session so we can discuss backup options and monitor the hourly forecast together.

One thing many families are surprised to hear is that cloudy evenings are actually some of my favorite conditions for beach photography on Oak Island and Bald Head Island. I typically do not reschedule sessions simply because it is cloudy. In fact, clouds often help create softer lighting and can lead to some of the most beautiful sunsets on the North Carolina coast. As the sun drops lower in the sky, it can peek through the clouds and illuminate them with incredible colors ranging from soft pinks and oranges to dramatic purples and blues.

I have been photographing families on Oak Island and Bald Head Island for more than five years and have become very familiar with local weather patterns, beach conditions, and summer storms that move through quickly. Some of my favorite family beach photos have actually been captured on evenings that originally looked questionable in the forecast!

  • Paw sure! I absolutely love when families include their dogs in their beach photo session. Dogs are part of the family too, and they can make for some really fun and candid moments during your session on Oak Island or Bald Head Island.

That said, it is important to remember that you are still responsible for looking after your pet throughout the session. I am happy to help hold a leash while we take certain photos, but I usually recommend including dogs in a portion of the session before taking them back to the house, golf cart, or car so we can fully focus on the remaining family combinations.

If you are bringing your dog, I also recommend:

    • Bringing treats or a favorite toy

    • Having water available

    • Bringing a leash that photographs well if possible

    • Planning for someone to help take them back after their portion of the session

  • I recommend being fully ready for your session at least 10 minutes before the scheduled start time. If I am meeting you at your beach house or vacation rental, having everyone dressed and ready beforehand helps maximize your time in front of the camera and allows us to take advantage of the best sunset lighting.

If we are meeting at a specific location on Oak Island, Bald Head Island, or Southport, I recommend arriving about 15 minutes early to allow time for parking, walking to the beach access, and finding our meeting location.

Please keep in mind that your session time begins at the scheduled start time. During the busy summer season, I often have multiple sessions scheduled each evening and cannot always guarantee extra time if your group arrives late.

  • One of the best parts about family beach photos on the North Carolina coast is that every location has its own unique look and feel. Some families love wide open beaches and sunset shoreline photos, while others prefer dunes, sea oats, piers, marsh views, lighthouses, or quieter hidden gem beach accesses.

I have photographed families all across Oak Island and Bald Head Island and put together detailed location guides to help you choose the best fit for your family and session style.

  • No worries at all — this is completely normal and honestly expected during family sessions! Some of the best family photos happen naturally in between the posed moments.

I always try to keep sessions relaxed, fun, and low-pressure while giving kids room to play, explore, and take breaks if needed. I also mix in candid moments throughout the session to capture genuine smiles, laughter, and interactions that feel authentic to your family.

After photographing families on Oak Island and Bald Head Island for years, I have learned that flexibility and patience go a long way. The goal is not perfection — it is capturing your family’s real personality and memories together at the beach.

  • Absolutely! We can do as many family combinations as time allows during your session. I typically begin with the full group before breaking off into smaller combinations such as grandparents with grandkids, individual families, siblings, couples, children, and more.

If you are planning an extended family beach session, I highly recommend thinking through your preferred combinations ahead of time so we can move efficiently and maximize your session time.

For families with younger children, I also try to front-load combinations involving kids earlier in the session while their attention spans and energy levels are still high.

  • During the busy summer season, turnaround times for family beach photos on Oak Island and Bald Head Island are typically around 2–3 weeks due to the high volume of sessions.

During the off-season, galleries are often delivered within about one week.

If you need your photos sooner for a special occasion, holiday card, gift, or printing deadline, please let me know ahead of time and I will do my best to accommodate your request whenever possible.
